April 11th, 2008 by Jodi

Hey all,

I took a couple of weeks off to relax and get my head together, but the spring deadlines are coming and it’s time to get back to work!  I haven’t disappeard, promise!

Chris Owen and I will be at the Romantic Times conference together next week with the kind folks at Torquere Press, so if you’re going, make sure to look us up!  Bring your books, or buy them there and we’ll sign them!  I look forward to meeting you.

Don’t forget about my latest m/m release, Dress to Impress.  It’s a steamy romance that centers around role play and two men who are very good at it.  So good that it’s sometimes hard to just be themselves.  You can buy it at www.torquerebooks.com.

Chris is still buried in snow, but here it’s spring and I’m feeling frisky!  Time to get back to writing.  :D

PR and the Writer

March 31st, 2008 by Jodi

Authors are, to some degree, obligated to do promotion.  Sometimes it’s by contract, sometimes it’s just because we want our work and our name to get around.  But promotion is time consuming and there are so many opportunities out there that it’s hard to decide what to do and when and how.

I have a website, a MySpace account, a discussion group and a blog.  There are author chats and conventions and interviews.  Quite frankly, I don’t have time for it all.

As a reader, what kind of promotion interests you the most?  Do you go to chats?  Do you read blogs?  Do you care about reviews or interviews?  Do you go to conventions?

I try to keep things relatively up to date.  For now, that might be the best I can do.  But I’d love to know what you’re looking for as a reader.

Thanks!

Are you reading lesbian romance/erotica?

March 25th, 2008 by Jodi

I have written a number of lesbian erotic short stories.  I know of a number of authors who want to write in the genre.  Trouble is, is appears that no one is buying it.

I recently learned that one lesbian erotic anthology in which I have a story has sold fewer than ten copies in almost three months.  IMHO, the anth is solid and well-written, so why isn’t it selling?

If you’re a reader of the f/f genre, what are your impressions?  Are you buying?  What are you buying?  Where are you buying it?  Are you liking what you buy?  If so, what is it?  If not, tell me what it is you’re not liking.  As a reader, what are you looking for in a story?

What besides content would make you want to buy lesbian erotica?  Is it the editor?  The authors?  A great cover?  The publisher?  The theme?

We, as authors, need to know this stuff, folks.  We can’t serve the readers if we don’t know what you’re looking for.  And unlike my m/m readers, you f/f folks have been very quiet about your preferences.  So what are they?  Don’t just comment on my work, let me know what authors you’re reading and which anthologies or novels you’ve liked or hated.  Be honest.  No hard feelings here, I’m looking for useful, honest information.

Leave me a comment here, or, if you prefer, feel free to send me an email at jodi at jodipayne dot net.

I very much look forward to hearing from you and welcome all comments on the subject.

Just the facts, Jack

March 19th, 2008 by Jodi

Once upon a time, I wrote a 15K f/f romance for an anthology for Publisher A and got paid $50.  Ouch, you say?  Not enough money?Wait.

The same fall I wrote a 3K f/f romance for an anthology for Publisher B (supposedly a “bigger publisher”), and got paid $100. Better, yes?

No.

For starters, Publisher B took my story, edited it how they pleased without my feedback and published the anth.  Publisher A and I went back and forth with edits for a couple of weeks, tweaking and talking and making it a great story, and they respected my work as an author.

Secondly, I’ve never heard a single word about my 3K story for Publisher B.  Not one.  No extra hits to my website, no email, no nothing.  No one that I know of has ever read it.  I don’t even know if the book sold to anyone.  But the story I wrote for Publisher A was reviewed several places, I’ve seen it in bookstores, and I got email from readers saying that they’d read my story and liked it - and because of that they then went out and bought something else I’d written after visiting my website.  Nine times out of ten, that was something that paid royalties.

Wow.

It’s not all about direct dollars, kids.  It’s about exposure.

Life lessons, man.  They’re so easy to come by.

Romantic Times

March 17th, 2008 by Jodi

Man, you turn around and a few days have gone by.  How does that happen?

Romantic Times 2008

Have I mentioned yet that I am going to be at the Romantic Times conference in Pittsburgh this year?  Because I am!  I’ll be hanging with Torquere Press and my buddy Chris Owen and who knows who else, so keep your eyes open and make sure to come by and say hello!

Among other things, I’ll be at the book signing on Saturday, so come buy a book and have me sign it, or bring a book, or a book cover, or a CD of your ebooks, or whatever.  Generally, I don’t mind signing body parts, but let us remember we’re in polite company so please keep it clean.  ;-)

Or, you know, find me when there’s no polite company around.  *evil grin*

I’m going to try to have some promo CDs to give away and I’m definitely going to have some swag to hand out.

See you there!

A question of Gender

March 7th, 2008 by Jodi

If you found a book that interested you, and you read it cover to cover and liked it, would it matter to you who the author was?  Would knowing the author’s name change whether or not you liked the book?  Would the author’s gender matter to you?

My answer to all of those questions is no.

It might be of interest to me that a particular book was written by a man or a woman, in that “huh, that’s cool”, kind of way, but would I be upset to find out that an author was (or identified) as one particular gender or another?  No way.  As with everything in life, someone’s gender (or gender identity) has nothing to do with their talent, their intelligence, or their creative soul.  Their gender has nothing to do with whether they are able to write a good story, and it certainly has nothing to do with whether they ought to be writing in any genre.

Another question for you.  If an author has a gender-ambiguous pen name, does that mean they are being disingenuous?  If they are female and write under a traditionally male name does that mean they are ashamed of who they are?

Certainly not.  A person may write under any pen name they choose.  Authors that write under pen names have important reasons for doing so, and I assure you that the use of pen names is about privacy, not about shame or deceit.  And, yes, and author is entitled to their privacy.  A reader is not entitled to know everything there is to know about an author.  Authors are not required to have a public face; they are not required to blog, or to make public appearances, sign books, or any of those things.  And the simple fact is that not every author can do those things anyway.  A lot of us (yours truly included) have day jobs and families and other committments.   If a writer chooses to appear in public in person or on the internet it’s generally because they want to meet their readers and other authors, and they want to market their work.

And my final point is that no one should ever make accusations without getting their facts straight.  Bear in mind that the internet is often not the place to turn to for dependable information.

My points are these:

1.  An author’s work speaks for itself.  Just as we’re told we should never judge a book by it’s cover, never judge an author by their gender representation (or lack thereof).  Read, and judge them fairly.

2.   Authors are people, too.  Human beings with lives, family, stress, adversity, and bills to pay just like everyone else.  Real people with real feelings.  Think twice before you treat them otherwise.

Thank you for reading.

New Release!

March 5th, 2008 by Jodi

I’ve got a new m/m story out today with Torquere Press. It’s part of their “Games People Play” line, and I’m really proud of it. It’s called Dress to Impress.

Here’s the Torquere Press blurb:

Matt thinks that Erik is the hottest thing he’s seen in a long time. So even when the bartender at his favorite watering hole tells Matt not to bother with a heartbreaker like Erik, he can’t help himself. He has to make a play for the beautiful man.

Erik would rather play games than settle into a regular relationship. He thinks his real life is pretty boring, and he’s all about being someone else every time he and Matt meet.

Matt’s happy to play along for awhile, but when he starts to want more, Erik balks. Can Matt find a way to win at Erik’s games before they both lose forever? It got a nice review from Angelia Sparrow, too!

You can check it out, read an excerpt (and buy it, of course. You know you want to buy it…) here.

On my Desktop

February 21st, 2008 by Jodi

I have been terrible about posting lately.  But I’ve just met a series of deadlines and now I have some free time to catch up!

What I’ve just submitted is another m/m Arcana story for Torquere Press, based on the tarot card Page of Cups.  It’s called Handyman.  Here’s a wee snip:

By the time their lips parted Danny was panting for breath.  He felt lightheaded.  He was seeing stars.

“Jesus.”

Ken nodded.  “Wow.”  He was panting, too, though not quite as hard.  He leaned into Danny’s body and Danny felt the stiff outline of Ken’s prick press into his hip.  “Feel that?”

Danny nodded.  “Yeah, I feel it.  I so feel it.”

Outside it started to rain all of a sudden.  The back of the van didn’t have any windows, but they could hear it well enough.  The raindrops pounded on the roof of the van, echoing loudly in the empty cargo hold.  Ken grinned slowly and ground his erection into Danny, making Danny moan.

Remember my Game People Play novella comes out on March 4.  Not long now!  It’s called Dress to Impress.  A little good old fashioned kink is good for the soul.
